A COMMUNITY UNITED

REPLANT LOVE 2024

In response to the devastating 2018 Woolsey Fire, Malibu Foundation and Clarins worked together to create a series of replanting events at Paramount Ranch in the Santa Monica Mountains. In total, together, we planted over 21,000 plants!

  • 2019: 3000 plants

  • 2021: 5000 plants

  • 2022: 8500 plants

  • Plus many other plants planted throughout the years in the region!

Now we’re back and ready to get our boots and gloves dirty yet again! Replant Love 2023, this coming November 5 at Juan Bautista De Anza Park, is new exciting iteration of this iniative, focusing on microforests. The Miyawaki method is a way of planting that mimics nature, increasing survivability, cooperation and competition, leading to faster growing plants, increased biodiversity, and less dependence on water. This microforest, the second in Los Angeles County and the first in the Santa Monica Mountains will also serve as a seed bank, leading to more microforests being planted all around Los Angeles County!

Replant Love 2024 aims to create a microforest in a burn area that works to remediate soil, increases biodiversity, and conserve water.

Learning from nature

What is a microforest?

A microforest is a densely planted, hyper-local, multi-layered small forest planted in a urban or suburban area that acts as a self-sustaining ecosystem to reconnect it back to nature!

The Miyawaki method, created by botanist Akira Miyawaki, involves the planting of various local, regionally adapted/grown shrubs and trees in very close proximity together, ensuring no two plants of the same height are side by side, ensuring maximum growth.

Maximizing Potential

Why a microforest?

The benefits of a microforests are many!

  • Creates a thick forest quickly

  • Improved carbon sequestration

  • Increased biodiversity, including native insects and animals moving back into the forest!

  • Supports the food web, from providing appropriate food for native species, as well as homes

  • Becomes self-managing after 2 years

  • Conserves water

  • Supports soil health

  • Provides shade and reduces heat in the area

  • Refuge for wildlife

  • Reconnects the area back to the native, natural beauty!

We will be planting the new microforest at Juan Bautista De Anza Park, in Calabasas in the heart of the Santa Monica Mountains.

Location

DE ANZA PARK

Ignited on November 8, 2018, the Woolsey Fire destroyed 88% of the Santa Monica Mountains, impacting nearly 97,000 acres, and devastated the cities and towns in the region, including Calabasas. Together, we can help.

Clarins, a family-owned, plant-based beauty company with a love and respect for nature, and Malibu Foundation come together again to create a microforest that will serve to combat water overuse, loss of biodiversity, and lack of nature in the surrounding community, with community members getting their hands dirty with us on the project.

Our goal is to help combat the rapid loss of native Santa Monica species and rising temperatures, alongside promoting water conservation and preventing future fires by planting resilient native plants. Native plants create fire hardened landscapes and encourage pollinator activity. This year, we are planting a microforest rather than traditional restoration, as the benefits are multi-faceted. This microforest is the 2nd in Los Angeles county, and the first in the Santa Monica Mountains region, and will lead the charge on research on the method. We are focused on proliferating microforests throughout Los Angeles County, and beyond, to push back against the devastation to our natural world.

In addition to a day of fulfilling work that they will be able to visit for years to come, participants can look forward to complimentary beverages and snacks and lots of education on how to build their own microforest to make the day a memorable one.

Join our effort to make the world a more resilient place on Sunday, February 4!
